Description

The character of Captain Marvel was created in 1939 by writer Bill Parker and artist C.C. Beck.  Originally known as Captain Thunder (under which he made an aborted appearance in the Ash Can edition of Whiz Comics #1) the name was changed when Fawcett discovered they could not obtain a copyright because another character by the same name already existed. Instead, they moved on to Captain Marvel, and he made his first official appearance in Whiz Comics #2.  Based on book sales alone, Captain Marvel was by far the most popular superhero of the 1940's, outselling even Superman.  Even so, in 1953, after a seven year battle with D.C. (who had filed a copyright infringement suit, claiming that Captain Marvel was nothing more than a copy of the Man Of Steel) Fawcett ceased publication of the title.  Ironically, nine years later, D.C. licensed the entire Captain Marvel family from Fawcett.  He retured to publication in 1991, but the name was changed to Shazam because Marvel Comics had already published and copyrighted their own Captain Marvel title in 1967.  Included in this offering is a CGC Certified 6.0 F (Restored) copy of Whiz Comics #57.  It will be shipped promptly in protective packaging.  Note: additional shipping charges apply to international orders. See Shipping and Payments for details.
