Stanley Link CHING CHOW Original Daily Cartoon ART, 1940   STANLEY LINK
Ching Chow (1940)
original daily comic panel art
india ink on heavyweight paper, art image size 6.5" x 4" on 7" x 4.5" sheet

This is the original final drawing by Stanley Link for the daily cartoon panel episode of Ching Chow that was published in newspapers on February 5, 1940. It features Ching Chow, a Chinese adventurer-philosopher who appeared in the Sunday page installments of Sidney Smith's popular comic strip The Gumps in the 1920s. Ching Chow achieved prominence outside of The Gumps with his appearance in this panel cartoon in which he dispensed wisdom to the readers of the daily newspaper.

Sidney Smith created The Gumps in 1917 and continued it until his death in 1935; Stanley Link was Smith's assistant on The Gumps for many years and continued Ching Chow under his own name after Smith died. Stanley Link also wrote and drew his own fantasy-adventure comic strip Tiny Tim from 1932 to 1957. This original is signed in full by Stanley Link at lower right. "Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.: Copyright, 1940, by News Syndicate Co., Inc." label appears at the bottom of the panel.
