Description

28 SPIRIT SECTIONS from The Philadelphia Record (1942-1944)

Although these were created for American newspapers up until 1952, the pre-1946 specimens are much harder to find as they were often given over to the WWII paper drives. All 28 SPIRIT sections come from the PHILADELPHIA RECORD and are "golden age" sized, as opposed to the "bed-sheet" size of the Chicago Sun and some other papers. Everyone will have different favorite sections, but I would judge there to be at least half a dozen iconic covers. Forced perspectives, coppers, rain, building logos, problematic race representation - the whole range of SPIRIT is represented with this lot.

I don't have the D.C. Archives volumes for notes but I do know Manly Wade Wellman contributed to the writing of many of these installments while the franchise's creator, Will Eisner, was serving in the US military during World War II.

If you think of each one coming down thru the decades separately this lot has a cumulative age of over 2,000 years.
