1st appearance of the Mandarin

2nd Tales of the Watcher feature

1st print

Marvel Comics February 1964

I must have first come across the Black Widow guest-starring in Daredevil in the early 1970's.  There was something very alluring about her look, as well as the back-story to the character.  When I did a bit of research I found some earlier Black Widow appearances in the Avengers - thank goodness for Marvel Indexes in the pre-internet days, eh?  When I delved a little deeper I discovered the earliest Black Widow appearances in comics, in Tales of Suspense 52, 53, 57, 60 & 64, and those 5 comics in particular are the inspiration behind this collection.

It expanded to become a complete run of 18 consecutive issues of Tales of Suspense from January 1964 to June 1965, and all of the comics are in beautiful condition.  Practically every issue is a key...

This particular auction is for Tales of Suspense 50, another key issue.

It features the 1st appearance of the Mandarin, the 2nd Tales of the Watcher story, with another beautiful Jack Kirby cover of the Mandarin and Iron Man, with stories by Stan the Man Lee and artwork by Don Heck and Larry Lieber.

Be sure to click on the photos of the front and back cover for high res images, giving a very clear indication of the condition of the comic.  Please have a look at them.  There's no writing inside the comic.  There's no tape.  The cover and centrefold are firmly attached at both staples.  There are no missing pages.  There are no coupons cut out.  There are no hidden surprises.

The comic has been stored in a Mylite2 bag with halfback backing board in a cool, dry room, and has only been removed to take the photos that you're perusing, which show the actual comic the winning bidder will receive.  Condition is Fine Plus (6.5) using Overstreet standards.

Enjoy!

About Us

I've been buying and selling comics for over 30 years.

All of the auctions I'm listing are from my personal collection.  They're either comics I've upgraded, or doubles, or issues that I purchased as part of a larger lot that I don't collect myself.  They've all been stored in bags and boards in a cool, dry, smoke-free room away from sunlight.

Every single comic that I'm listing has been carefully checked and graded.  To do that I've inspected each and every page, as well as the front and back cover, paying special attention to the staples, checking for cover gloss front and back, holding them up to the light to catch any hard to find creases, bends and other hard-to-spot flaws.

When I assign a grade to a comic, I'm doing my absolute best to be accurate.  I'll include the Overstreet description of the assigned grade, so you can be sure of what to expect.  I constantly refer to the 3rd edition of the Overstreet Comic Book Grading Guide - and if you're not familiar with it I highly recommend it.  Especially when it comes to older comics it's a real eye-opener…

Payment

If you're planning to bid on multiple auctions, I'm happy to wait until you've finished bidding to ship your comics.  All I ask is that you let me know, that you contact me within a week of the auction ending, and that you settle up at the end of each week.

And if you'd like to use an alternative method of payment to Paypal please contact me before bidding.

Shipping and Insurance

Please check the 'shipping and payment' tab for specific shipping costs for this item.  It's located next to the auction 'description' tab underneath the main photo at the top left corner of the page.  What it says there is a very accurate estimate for the cost of shipping this one comic to your location.

I always offer combined shipping on all of my auctions, and will always let you know what the cheapest method of shipping is.  Winning bidders please wait to receive an invoice from me before sending payment, so I can work out the most economical way to ship your comics to you.

All of the comics being listed this week will ship with full insurance in custom-designed sturdy cardboard boxes, to offer the best protection possible for this really nice collection.

My apologies, but this means I won't be offering Canada Post Lettermail options for this week's auctions, because I'm not prepared to ship these comics without full insurance - and Canada Post doesn't allow insurance with Lettermail!

Within Canada, shipping options for this comic, via Canada Post regular parcel mail, including full insurance, securely packed in one of my custom-designed sturdy cardboard boxes, start at $13.95.

To the USA, shipping options for this comic, via Canada Post small packet airmail, including full insurance, securely packed in one of my custom-designed sturdy cardboard boxes, start at $11.95 - yes, less than domestic shipping, thanks to Canada Post...

To the rest of the world, shipping options for this comic, via Canada Post small packet airmail, including full insurance, securely packed in one of my custom-designed sturdy cardboard boxes, start at $19.95.

Shipping prices for all of the key issues will be significantly higher, because of the insurance costs.  So if the quoted auction shipping costs are higher than you're expecting it's probably because I'm factoring in a higher insurance cost.

If you live outside North America, please contact me before bidding to confirm the above rates.

Overstreet Grade Description

“Fine Plus (6.5) – Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book’s appearance by a perceptible amount.”

“Fine (6.0) - An above average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects.  Eye appeal is somewhat reduced because of slight surface wear and the accumulation of small defects, especially on the spine and edges.  A Fine condition comic book appears to have been read a few times and has been handled with moderate care.  Some accumulation of minor bindery defects is allowed.  Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases.  Inks show a major reduction in reflectivity.  Blunted or abraded corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discolouration, and/or foxing.  Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present.  A minor spine roll is allowed.  There can also be a 1/4 inch spine split or severe colour break.  Staples show minor discolouration.  Minor staple tears and an accumulation of stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration.  In rare cases a comic was not stapled at the bindery and therefore has a missing staple; this is not considered a defect.  Any staple can be replaced on book up to Fine, but only vintage staples can be used on books from Very Fine to Near Mint.  Mint books must have original staples.  Paper is brown to tan and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness.  No hint of acidity in the odour of the newsprint.  Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.  Centrefold may be loose but not detached.”
