SUPERMAN THE MAN OF TOMORROW (DC - McClure Publications - Winter, 1938)1st Complete Origin Of Superman This is an Extreme Rarity

With Action Comics #1 selling now for OVER three Million dollars in the highest grade and Action Comics #7 at over $200,000 in VF, this amazing comic book (virtually unknown) is a stellar long term investment.

This is one of the Rarest and most historic Superman comic books ever published. It was published about the same time (or maybe shortly before) Action Comics #7 and contains the very first COMPLETE Origin story of Superman ever seen; Plus panels used to create ACTION COMICS #1 and #2! Most collectors are not aware that the rejected daily newspaper strips were cut up and pasted on larger art board to create ACTION COMICS #1 and #2

I have sold only one other example of this amazing comic book in the past 40 years and have actively searched for other examples for decades but it is far more Rare than an Action Comics #1, as it was not distributed to the public. When this amazing High grade came available, I snapped it up immediately, as it is perhaps the best surviving example. I show only a few of the 34 pages due to space constraints with ebay, but each and every page is amazing.

Why this is so Rare?:

Only a very limited print run was created for the purpose of selling SUPERMAN as a Daily comic strip to the various News Syndicates throughout the USA. It is estimated that less then 100 were printed in the early winter of 1938, as SUPERMAN was scheduled for a January 6, 1939 national syndication debut.

A bit of HISTORY:

Superman, created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, first appeared in 30 daily strips that they labored over for four years (from concept to finished work in 1934 - 1938). These daily strips were reworked several times in order to produce a hopeful comic strip star, with their final submission sent to McClure newspaper syndicate in the early Spring of 1938. They were rejected once again but the strips were literally sitting on the desk of the editor when Sheldon Mayer happened to come by looking for rejected material for the purpose of comic book ideas for DC Comics. The Superman strips were handed to Mayer and he immediately knew they would be perfect for a comic book. When showing them to DC editor Vincent Sullivan he saw them as the perfect lead story for the new title he was working on, called ACTION COMICS.

Securing permission from Siegel and Shuster, the rejected newspaper strips were cut up and arranged on comic book pages. He had Siegel and Shuster create a few more panels to allow for better transition (as they did not have the space to run the entire origin story) and also asked them to create a cover. The result was Action Comics #1 (June, 1938).

Action Comics #2 and part of #3 were created in this same way, being cut up from these rejected newspaper strips.

By the Fall of 1938 it was apparent that McClure syndicate had made a HUGE blunder by rejecting the SUPERMAN series and literally allowing DC Comics to take them for nothing (other than paying Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster a paltry $130 to buy the daily strip art). In the fall of 1938 McClure acquired the rights to publish SUPERMAN as a daily adventure series, but they negotiated with DC comics instead of Siegel and Shuster, as DC thought that $130.00 paid to the boys gave them the rights of ownership (but that is another story).

A huge campaign was initiated by McClure touting the coming of Superman in their papers (these early ads are quite rare and valuable by the way) and on January 16, 1939 SUPERMAN’s first adventure strip was published. SUPERMAN began with the original origin story finally told in twelve amazing daily strips (seen first in this amazing comic book pictured above). With a readership that eventually dwarfed the comic books, Superman became a national sensation. The daily strip series became extremely successful and by the Winter of 1939 SUPERMAN had been awarded a spot in the full color Sunday pages. The art and stories of these early newspaper stories are spectacular, showcasing some of Shuster’s best art by the way.
