These are two pages of original artwork penciled by Curt Swan and inked by Sal Amendola for an interior double page spread, for pages 28 + 29, published in “SUPERMAN III, THE OFFICIAL ADAPTATION OF THE MOVIE”, Vol. 1, No. 1, 1983, DC Comics Inc.

Curt Swan’s Bronze Age Superman double page spreads are increasingly rare and difficult to find.

SUPERMAN III is the first comic book adaptation of a movie that is about a comic book Superhero. The story is titled: “I HAVE MET THE ENEMY... AND HE IS ME”.

This 2-page spread contains a key story subplot: Gus Gorman (played by Richard Pryor in the movie) creates a kind of “Kryptonite”, which he delivers to Superman while disguised as a 3 Star General during a Smallville Superman Celebration. The “Kryptonite” will not prove fatal, but will play havoc with Superman’s emotions, causing him to split into two versions of himself, one good, one bad. Later, they will ultimately duke it out in a junkyard showdown.

The computer screens in the center panels (page 28) appear to be photographs, glued into position. Why?

The lettering for the computer screens were probably originally drawn in black ink against a white background and then photographed. The negatives (black background, white lettering) were probably used for the artwork.

This procedure would have saved a lot of time and effort and looked a whole lot better than the alternative: drawing inked outlines of the lettering, then tediously filling in and around the lettering with more black ink.

MEASUREMENTS:
Each sheet of original artwork measures about 15 3/4 inches high X 10 5/8 inches wide.
Together, the 2-page spread measures about 15 3/4 inches high X 21 1/4 inches wide.

CONDITION:
Please examine photos below; they help show the item’s condition.
The artwork appears to be in VERY GOOD or FINE condition. The pages are pretty clean: no tape, no tape residue, tears, repairs, stains, etc.
The computer screens’ photo-artwork has surface wear, probably from being rubbed while stacked. On one screen, the “8”s in “15.08%” and “18.06%” appear scratched, exposing the photo’s white paper underneath. Due to these scratches’ exact size & positioning, both look like corrections, probably to fix the segments of the numbers “8” that incorrectly photographed black instead of white. These scratches would therefore part of the original artwork. Compare photographs of the photo-artwork computer screens against the published artwork. See photos and full description.
This item is old, used, and in as-is, as-found, estate condition. Assume it shows age, has wear, scuffmarks, and other defects. Condition problems, when found, are described & photographed. Some can occur multiple times; the item might have 100+ scratches; not each can be described or photographed. Experienced dealers and collectors understand this.
